artist statement

I like the idea of dichotomies.

There are common elements in my artwork that seem to oppose each other,
however, they may also find a way of harmonizing together. Some examples are
marrying geometric shapes with organic, black and white splashed with brilliant
color, broken symmetry, or a solemn content woman among wild ravenous animals.
I find these elements surprising and exciting. As my former fine arts professor
often said to us, “Repetition creates understanding. Variation creates
interest.”

저는 이분법적인 접근을 좋아합니다. 제 작품에서는 평범한 요소들이 서로 대치하는 것처럼 보이지만, 함께 조화하는 방법을 추구하고 있습니다. 정형적인 도형이 비정형적 도형들과 결합되거나, 흰색과 검은색이 아름다운 색상들과 함께 뿌려져 있거나, 균형이 무너져 있거나, 또는 굶주린 야생동물들 사이에 있는 침통한 표정의 여성 등이 그런 예가 될 수 있습니다. 저는 이러한 요소들에서 놀라움과 즐거움을 발견합니다. 저의 미술 교수님께서도 종종 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “반복이 이해를 창조한다. 변화는 흥미를 창조한다.”

제 작품은 기독교 영향을 또한 지니고 있지만, 설교하는 내용은 없습니다. 저는 구원과 용서 같은 종교적인 주제에서 영감을 받고 그것들은 작품에 접목합니다. 여러분이 그런 주제를 믿던지 혹은 그렇지 않던지, 그런 주제들은 여전히 아름다우며, 우리는 잠재의식적으로 그것들을 우리의 삶속에서 찾고 있을 수 있습니다.

종종 제 작품들은 어둡고, 무섭거나 또는 우울해보일 수 있지만, 그 의미는 사실 매우 깊고 아름답습니다. 저는 삶의 재미없고 우울한 것들로부터 아름다움을 찾고자 노력합니다. 그러한 노력들이 우리를 조금 더 나은 사람으로 만든다고 믿기 때문입니다.

저는 연필, 펜, 마커, 숯, 아크릴, 물감, 오일 등과 같은 전통적인 재료들을 주로 사용하고, 그런 재료들을 종종 섞어서 사용하기도 합니다. 가끔 디지털 작업들을 보실 수도 있는데, 요즘은 잘 사용하지 않습니다.

BIO

Hi, I'm Brandon Inman, an American illustrator from Flint, Michigan. I have lived in Daegu since 2009 and have been married to my beautiful wife, Ga-Eun, for 3 years. We don't have any kids yet, but have a funny little mutt named Grace.

WORK

I like the idea of dichotomies. There are common elements in my artwork that seem to oppose each other, however, they may also find a way of harmonizing together. Some examples are marrying geometric shapes with organic, black and white splashed with brilliant color, broken symmetry, or a solemn content woman among wild ravenous animals. I find these elements surprising and exciting. As my former fine arts professor often said to us, “Repetition creates understanding. Variation creates interest.”

My work also has Christian influence without being preachy. I'm often moved by the religious themes of salvation, redemption, forgiveness and incorporate them in my art. Whether you believe in those ideas or not, they are still beautiful and we may even subconsciously desire them in our own lives.

Sometimes, my work may seem dark, frightening, or somber, yet the meaning is actually very deep and beautiful. I try to find beauty in the mundane or melancholy things of life because I believe that's what makes us better people.

I mainly work in traditional materials; pencil, pen, marker, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, oil – often mixed. Sometimes, you may see some digital work although it's rare these days.
